Chinese Tradition in Indonesia

As I posted before the Ching beng festival. I would like to post an essay about Chinese tradition in Indonesia. And here we go.

Chinese Tradition in Indonesia

We can find the most common tradition of Chinese in some public places in Indonesia, these days. We can find the Barongsai* or the Liong* in lunar new year festival. Chinese tradition is not really based on the scripture and most of them are ideology and philosophy of  Chinese. Chinese tradition in Indonesia is actually same with the tradition in China. However, the Chinese tradition in Indonesia is not enough well known. Here are some tradition which is not really promoted well.
There is Cap go meh day after fifteen day of lunar new year festival. In the tradition believed that all the Goddess fall down to earth to bless the earth against all possibilities accident. There are also lot of stories about Cap Go Meh that can be long if I explain it. Second, there is Ching Beng festival(4-5 in the 4th  month of lunar calendar). In this tradition, all Chinese go to cemetery to have prayer to their beloved parents or ancestors. Some of them will follow the ritual in Buddhism, and some follow the ritual by the ideology. Next is Tuan Wu Jie festival (5 at the 5th  month of lunar calendar). In this festival, all Chinese will eat *Bacang to commemorate a hero against the era of corruption in China which is a prime minister in long long time ago. Some believed the Bacang must be thrown in the river or the sea, because in the story the prime minister is not trusted by the king, so he got dead punishment and his body had thrown to the bottom of the river or sea. People who had respect at that time believed that he is taken by the Goddess of Sea and by throwing the Bacang into the river or sea will give him food to eat. Some believed Bacang is for the fishes in the sea to eat so the body of the hero will not eaten by the fishes. Fourth, there is Chong Yen Jie(15 at the 7th month). festival. In this festival Chinese will give rice to poor people and some will have prayer to their beloved parent or ancestor. Next is Cong Cin Jie festival. Chinese will eat Lunar cake. Lunar cake was used to contain a message of rebel against the colonial of Mongolia in 1206 A.D. Some also believed Lunar Cake is to celebrate the raise Goddess of the moon to heaven which fall down to earth in 10 suns story. After that, there is Chong Yan Jie festival(9 at the 9th month). In this festival all Chinese all over the world will come back to their hometown. Some believe they have to pray the born of the Dragon God. The last there is Tong Tzu Jie festival. There is no specific date for this festival. Usually ten days before new year a.d. In this festival, Chinese will eat small colourful onde-onde* with ginger hot water. This festival gathers one big family to celebrate the coming of winter season in China.
That’s all for the tradition. We can see Chinese tradition in Indonesia is not enough promoted. I don’t know about other tradition is enough promoted or not. In my opinion, I think it would be better if Indonesia government promoted the Chinese tradition well. It can put more color of variation of traditions in Indonesia. So, it can be a magnet for tourism to see the colorful of Indonesia.

*Barongsai= A Lion believed in Chinese legend help them from problems. (Lot of version of the problems)
*Liong=Liong is dragon that believed as Chinese’s ancestor.
*Bacang=Preparation of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, shaped into a diamond, filled with meat, and steamed.
*Onde-onde=Small rounded flour with peanut inside it.

Chinese Tradition

This morning me and my family did a Chinese tradition which is we pray and giving honor to my beloved grandfather and grandmother's cemetry. This tradition actually for Buddhism ceremony. In my family there are also Christian anda Catholic. But, they religious activity is not so thick. So all of us still do this tradition.

Here are some photos of this event:
This is believed as money in the other world

Chinese Buddhism Funeral

Burning the tribute

Shoes, clothes and many wierd things that made from paper
which is believed we burn them to send to our family in the other world

Giving honor and pray

Believe it or not, I usually see many weird incident when we are doing this tradition. There is a tool which we use to asking permission to our beloved. In Buddhism, there is a belief that we summon the spirit of our beloved by asking a permission from a Great God in Buddhism called "Pak Kung". I don't really know what is His duty in heaven. After we got the the permission from Him, we can summon our beloved spirit. Here is the weird incident usually happened. Every we summon my grandfather and ask him "can we start this ceremony?" by using the asking permission tool he always say okay in first time but not so when we asking permission to leave. My father said maybe they want us to stay longer and have a talk to other family member. Especially in my grandma cemetery. We usually not so easy to get a permission to leave. My dad said she really likes when we are uniting and have a joke and do many other things. We look like having a picnic in my grandma cemetery X_X We usually make a tend to block the sunlight so we can stay longer. If we are too earlier to asking permission we can got 7 times of not permission. After we have a long chat, anda asking for a permission. They will give okay until every ceremony is done. So it is really funny you know.

Xiao Wu

Xiao Wu is my dog's name. Xiao means little and Wu means five. So, her name has meaning  the little fifth. We gave her that name because she is the fifth member of our family. Xiao wu is a mixed Maltese.

She first came to our home is on 22nd August the same day as my brother's birthday. She was born on 22nd Juli. So, she was one month old when she came to our home.

Her mother was a maltese. Her mother gave birth two puppies. Xiao Wu is the first taken puppies from her mother. Actually my brother was little bit not bear when he took Xiao Wu from her mother. Her mother looked like she knew that her child wanted to be taken. After that the owner of Xiao Wu's mother tell us that she was looking for her child. Every night she looked like sniffed around her child's bed. It made our heart touched. After one month we took Xiao Wu we got information that her mother has passed away. This photo looks like her mother. But I browse it on the internet.

Xiao Wu's father was a wild dog on the street. No one knew how her mother and her father meet each other. Because Xiao wu's mother was a house dog which is one day full in house. Xiao Wu also has a boyfriend who comes every day to our home. Two days ago my father saw them doing an adult activity X_X I hope Xiao Wu is not pregnant. I was little bit tempered when I heard that kind of relation

I also have a fan page for Xiao Wu which I created long ago. But, I haven't update it anymore.
